Late to the party

Hey, so I wanted to start the blogging at thirty days before but I missed that opportunity, so now I'm just blogging from 28 days onward. I'm Zoë my family and I are taking this vacation of a lifetime and all of us thought it would be fun to take whoever is into reading blogs along for the journey.

We've already bought our backpacks and tickets for flights and eurail passes. We've done pretty much all the major things that needed to get done. Now it's just small stuff like going on hikes to make sure we're fit enough and deciding heavy or light. I've sufficiently bonded with my backpack, which sounds funny but was totally necessary because I have autism, and when the world around me is gonna be changing so much I absolutely needed to be comfortable with my backpack. My backpack is going to be my "safe space" for when I'm abroad.

This place is a wonderfully whimsical maze! I can't tell how many floors it is because there's so many unexpected nooks, and crannies, and even half-floors.  No elevators. Just a bunch of steps and stairs. I realized that the best way to navigate it is by remembering the murals you pass on your way.  There's a communal kitchen with everything you could possibly need to cook a meal, plus free continental breakfast every morning.  And plenty of places where one can sit and chat or just people watch. All in all, a very interesting experience.

Bonjour, Paris, et à bientô!

Getting to Paris was not a particularly pleasant experience, one that included a guy walking by  wearing a TINY  green kilt. No pictures. You may thank me. I was not able to reserve tickets online and, when I went to the station, they had one train (at premium price) and one leaving the next day at a reasonable rate...to Lille. I figured I had enough to juggle so I swallowed hard, pulled out a credit card, and booked us to Paris.  Going through customs here is like in an airport but somehow more hectic. The group of guys wearing crazily printed tuxedos probably added to that feel, though. Well, at their version of TSA we were all pulled aside for extra screening - no big deal - but they kept Peekaloo's luggage. They went through it repeatedly, looking for a knife says Agent Attitude. Our Italian Fling! First Stop: Venice

In just four days, I've learned an incredible amount about this little jewel. That's not saying much, considering all I knew about Venice was that they had gondolas. The first thing we found as we arrived was "Snowdude and the 7 tall guys". Seriously. We got pics. There's two sections to Venice: island and mainland. The mainland part is called Mestre, whereas the island side actually bears the name Venice. And it's not an island. It's a lagoon with 188 islands separated by canals and joined by 400 bridges.  The most famous of the bridges is Rialto, which comes from the Italian phrase for "high river". It is a veritable maze of byways and bridges. The main thoroughfare being the Grand Canal. It just so happens that we were there on Saturday, Royal Wedding day.
