Daytime Dublin

We had another dreary, rainy morning but that doesn't seem to stop this town. I was told it was always green Ireland because it rained so much and I've found this to be true. In fact, I specifically planned this visit to Ireland during one of its dryest month - May - and according to statistics, it still rains an average of 18 days out of the month of May. Which is probably why I haven't seen any curly haired girls. XD

So we braved the drizzly morning and headed to Dublin Castle. Yo, this is my first real castle! We didn't go inside but the architecture was pretty impressive.

We also visited Christchurch Cathedral. The gloomy skies gave the statue on the bench a particularly poignant feel, especially with the cathedral towering in the background.

We came back through Temple Bar. Lots of touristy shops. The cobblestone roads reminded me of Old San Juan and it makes sense. The Irish are said to have had a hand in building El Morro and the blue cobblestones in San Juan were actually brought to Puerto Rico as ballast on Spanish merchant ships, then used to pave the streets.

It seems there's a rhythm to the rain here, though. Each day, it drizzled all morning and early afternoon, then the sun shined through the clouds for a few hours. We took some pictures of local historical sights during the drizzly morning, then went back for some better shots. I'm glad I did.

We later ended up back at The Brazen Head and got much better pictures.

We also had a meal and, yes, we ordered a "point a' Guinness" at Ireland's oldest pub.

The food was delicious and the Guinness...

Well, the first sip goes smooth but ends with a bitter aftertaste. The second sip tastes better and you notice that there's almost no fizz to it, making it much more pleasant than any other beer I've ever had. By the third taste, you're drinking it down like water because, somehow, the bitterness is gone and only the smooth, fresh taste remains. And, no, it's not the alcohol talking. We actually shared a single pint between the four of us, a mistake which I've been regretting. Why did I not get a second one?! Or a third? Or?... Oh... Maybe one wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Oh, remember how my the first post on this blog talked about "Where's Waldo?"? Guess what?!

  1. I had no idea there was an Ireland/PR connection. Interesting. Dublin is lovely.
