Trieste, Second Only to Barcelona...

We choose to visit Trieste on a whim. We had 3 days to kill and originally planned to visiting Slovenia and/or Croatia but couldn't find lodging. Then we saw the name "Trieste" on the map near the Slovania border. My nieces were born while the family lived in Cote de Trieste (NJ). Why not check it out?

Best decision this whole trip!

The town is just lovely and the people are what you would expect from a sleepy little Italian town.

We got into another AirBnB, this one with a 4-person elevator -

- positively luxurious! -

- and got to experience living as a Trieste local. And, as a local, we got pizza from the shop at the end of the block. Except ordering pizza in Italy is not as easy as one would think. When ordering a mushroom pizza, I've never been asked what kind of mushroom (they had 4 different kinds!). Same with onions. Want sauce? You better ask for it. Italians are very specific about toppings! But all's well that ends well and this ended with the most perfect brick-oven pizza I've ever had in my life.

The next morning, off we went exploring and found a colosseum dating to 1BC.

And an ancient arch that, instead of being moved, was incorporated into the restaurant.

There's even a plaza were we found parts of a large statue of the same era as the colosseum.

There's even a castle.

With a working drawbridge!

Unfortunately, Trieste suffered a lot of civilian casualties during WWII. There's several plaques commemorating the many losses.

But we found some more friends to cheer us with the reminder that we have family in every corner of the world!

Great food, great people, great history. We're definitely coming back!
